Lines In the Lot

7th Grader Matthew Havrilla writes about a unique project that his History class completed.

If you look into the main parking lot of the Woodland Hills Academy, you may still be able to see outlines of either Whales or Horses.

In mid-October, history teacher and mayor of Turtle Creek, Adam Forgie mimicked what an ancient civilization, the Nazcas, did so long ago. The lines were made out of chalk, and were located in the main parking lot of the Academy. Mr. Forgie was very excited for this project and said he was pleased with the turnout. The project took about 2 days to complete. Mr.Forgie said that all students did a nice job, understood the project, and were neat with their work. Many of the teachers complemented the project and all of the students had fun!

Help us, Help the Polar Bears

PBILogoCenPosProject Polar Bear is underway! We are a team of students from the Woodland Hills Academy and Junior High working to reduce our carbon footprint on the environment. Our team name is the Arctic Avengers and we are committed to helping the polar bears.

Every year, millions of magazines and catalogs find their way into landfills. The magazine industry contributes to our carbon output which in turn, affects the polar bears. Carbon emissions leads to climate change, melting the sea ice, which is crucial for the survival of polar bears.

Please help us in our endeavor to protect the polar bears’ habitat. You can do this in number of ways. Send magazines into school for us to recycle, create art projects with old magazines and catalogs instead of throwing them away, visit catalog choice online to stop unwanted catalogs and junk mail flyers, utilize online magazine subscriptions.

Our team will be visiting the Pittsburgh Zoo on Saturday, November 16th, 2013 to provide information to the public about magazines- recycling/art projects and how they(the public) can help the Polar Bears. We will also be working on other activities over the next few months.

We also have polar bear T’s for sale. Please contact our teacher, Mrs. Nyapas at nyaphe@whsd.us if you would like to purchase one,. The cost is $12 and proceeds will go towards our adoption of a polar bear!
